A FAT PIG EVENT – Food & Wine Pairing

It was my first Fat Pig Event, a Food & Wine Pairing for a Private Party of 9, and I couldn’t be happier with how it all played out!

The event featured 6 courses, 6 wines, one Chef, and one Fat Pig host (moi!) to serve the wines, discuss the pairings, and make sure the guests were wining, dining, and having fun!

The tasting began in the afternoon and we sipped and snacked our way into the evening. 4 plus hours absolutely flew by - what a delicious way to spend a Saturday! The menu started with Goat Cheese, Bacon, and Arugula Flat Bread, served family style on a rustic wooden pizza board. This was followed by a plate of Sesame Ginger Green Beans and then a spoonful of Saffron Risotto, topped with the most stunning looking Tiger Prawn. Next was a lovely portion of Seared Duck Breast served on top of a fried Golden Beet. And then came a ramekin sized portion of Braised Lamb Navarin - talk about French ragoût heaven! The final dish of the night arrived in the form of a sweet treat: a Ginger Mascarpone Crème Brûlée that had guests asking for more.

Sounds amazing, don’t you think? Chef Matteo Marra absolutely knocked it out of the park! And I’m telling you, you would never believe that this Chef was only 17 years old; currently working his way through the Culinary Program at VCC. I was incredibly impressed with his pairing choices, his costing, and his overall execution in the kitchen. With zero hesitation, I have asked Matteo to work with me again on the next dinner event that I am currently putting together.

The wine portion of the night was just as successful. We sampled 6 different wines, 5 of which were priced at $20 or less per bottle, and paired each glass with one of our delicious menu items. We began with a Rosé, moved to a Gewürztraminer and then on to a Viognier/Semillon White Blend. Next came a Pinot Noir, a Chianti, and for the final pairing, an Organic sparkling. Each bottle went a surprisingly long way, giving the guests much more than a usual tasting pour. You know, Fat Pig style!

I was delighted with all aspects of my premier event. I had happy and full-to-the-brim guests, and everyone walked away with a few new (and definitely affordable) wines to add to their shopping list. Chef Matteo was given an opportunity to cook for a crowd, focus on food pairings, and I was given a chance to put on my Event Planner hat, bring friends, families and strangers together and spread the idea of spoiling your inner Piggy – be it on the nose, the palate, or in your tummy!

I’ve listed the full Pairing Menu below, but before you peek, perhaps you want to take a guess at what we paired with what! I’m always open to suggestions, so let me know what you think I should try next time.

All in good fun, Piggies! Until next time…
