Dîner en Blanc – Vancouver 2014

Diner en Blanc - Vancouver 2014 certainly was the talk of the town! A lot of buzz about who held a highly coveted ticket, the secret location of this 'hush-hush' event and what glamorous activities would be taking place throughout the night. But I'm not here to comment on all of that - my piggy focus, as always, is all about the food!

Diner en Blanc is one of the most notable events of the year and with 3,200 Vancouverites in attendance it's safe to say that it's also the year’s grandest and chicest of picnics. I mean, where else would you hear of Hawksworth Restaurant providing a $45 3-course meal that can be ordered ahead of time and is served right to your seat?

According to The Social Concierge, the hard-working hosts of this elegant soiree, approximately two-thirds of Diner en Blanc guests bring in their own high-end feast, so you can imagine how excited I was to stroll through the sea of white to examine what everyone had packed. I'm telling you, putting together the ultimate picnic basket is an art form! Some well-prepared guests had made their meals from scratch while others opted to bring in take-out from their favourite local restaurants. I had anticipated a lot of delicious cheese and charcuterie platters - it's always a great picnic route - but I was not expecting the caliber of full entrees that had been prepared. Never would I have imaged that guests would be dining on full lobsters, whole roasted chickens and homemade strawberry-balsamic ice cream.

Hundreds of diners went to great lengths to assemble their elegant meals and I couldn't have been more impressed with the spread. I'm so happy to be able to share some of these picnic pictures and I am so very thankful to those parties who were even willing to let me sample their dinners and their desserts. In true Piggy spirit, I hope this blog post encourages you to take the time to indulge in a picnic evening of your own. Besides, practice makes perfect and the countdown for next year’s event has already begun!

Fortunate to be invited to the #DEBvan Media Lounge, I sampled various refreshments provided by Hawksworth Restaurant. Paired with a glass (or maybe it was two!) of sparkling, my Diner en Blanc experience certainly started off on the right piggy foot.

Nicole Dinner

Nicole Vu and her pretty date had a delicious picnic basket: homemade meatballs and fig rolls to start, carrot and chickpea tahini salad, beautiful looking salmon and caprese and potato salad on the side. Oh, and did I mention that there was also homemade corn bread?!

CC & Whole Foods

On the left hand side, thanks to Keelie Valentine’s photo (hey, girl!) you’ll see a delicious display of Cactus Club’s Butternut Squash Ravioli. For those of you who have indulged in this dish, you’ll appreciate how great of a take-out choice this was. And on the right hand side, this gorgeous Diner en Blanc guest decided to bring in some brick oven pizza’s from Whole Foods Market: “I can bring whatever I want, I’m pregnant!” – she said.

Hawksworth Media

Chef David Hawksworth and his hard-working team were a site to see! Their open-air kitchen was a real treat for curious foodie fans!

As the hired caterer of this soiree, guests were given the option to pre-order Hawksworth Restaurant’s 3-course Diner en Blanc menu. Not to mention a delicious baguette supplied by my favourite, Terra Breads. This picture, taken by the lovely Shirley Zhang, gives you an idea of how well this entire meal was presented.
Muchzilla & Charcuterie

Potato Thief

Nicole IceCream

Nicole’s homemade strawberry-balsamic ice cream was the perfect after-dinner treat. And how she got it to remain cold was seriously impressive. I’m telling you, this girl might just be the ultimate picnic participant!
